Overview
One of the few champions in the game with infinite scaling, Veigar is a late game monster best known for his ability to delete champions with a single button. But the rest of his kit is also potent, including a cage that is one of the best zone denial tools in the game. Veigar is a strong pick for anyone who wants to have some oomph in the late game. Keys to Remember About Veigar
Late game, one thing with Veigar is that you may waste damage by overkilling opponents. You should still do it sometimes (because it's funny) but a Q + W can sometimes be enough to delete the squishier opponents whereas saving R to help peel off a tank or bruiser can help your fellow carries.
While Event Horizon [E] can stun opponents if they touch the edge, it can be enough to just use it to block off space or to trap an enemy inside, and is much easier to use this way than to try to land the stun directly on enemies.
Strengths
While the fun and draw of his kit is the infinite AP scaling from Baleful Strike [Q] and the one-shot potential of Primordial Burst [R], it’s actually Veigar’s Event Horizon [E] that can often be the game-changing ability in his kit. It’s extremely powerful as a zoning tool to prevent teams from contesting you for key objectives or from defending their own structures -- and it can obviously also be used as a regular ability to catch enemies out and then blow them up with his damage-laden kit. Late game, just a simple Baleful Strike [Q] into Dark Matter [W] on a target inside of the cage can be enough to kill them.
Weaknesses
He’s very weak early, which is typically not a good thing in Solo Queue, as games are much less likely to go towards the late stages of games where Veigar becomes a powerhouse. Being weak means teams are more likely to snowball against him and he won’t have enough time to scale up and do anything about it. He’s also an extremely immobile champion, so if he’s repeatedly ganked early, it could lead to a lot of deaths, and if he’s behind, even in a longer game, he may lack the necessary damage to blow through enemies. He can sometimes just be a one-and-done champion to begin with when it comes to who he can kill.
Game Plan
Early Game: Play safe and look to farm with your Q as much as possible -- the best use for it is to finish a minion while also hitting the enemy champion. At level 6, you can look for kills if you’re able to land Event Horizon [E] on an enemy.
Mid Game: As you start to get items online, you’ll have good power over neutral objectives thanks to Event Horizon [E] -- your goal is to isolate and kill one opponent with your ultimate early in the fight to give your team the advantage.
Late Game: The strategy doesn’t change much from mid game, but at this point you’ll be extremely strong and difficult to deal with. You can delete all but the tankiest of champions at this phase of the game.
